El recuento sobre los orígenes del narcotráfico en la Guajira colombiana, reafirma el talento del director de El abrazo de la serpiente y evidencia el de su codirectora.

Luego del rotundo éxito tanto crítico como comercial de El abrazo de la serpiente (primer largometraje colombiano en ser nominado a un Premio Oscar), el director Ciro Guerra regresa con Pájaros de verano, un título que puede llegar a desorientar al espectador con relación a la temática abordada.

Co-dirigida por Cristina Gallego (esposa del director), esta cinta sobre el narcotráfico colombiano, nos cuenta una historia que no han llegado a tocar ni las infames “narco-novelas” ni películas norteamericanas como Soplo, Escobar: Paraíso perdido o Barry Seal: Solo en América. Pájaros de Verano (nombre utilizado para identificar a los traficantes), es un brutal relato sobre los orígenes del comercio de la marihuana, el cual comenzó a darse a finales de los años sesenta en la Guajira colombiana.

El choque cultural que se abordó en la anterior película de Guerra, aquí también se aborda a partir de las tradiciones de la cultura indígena Wayúu y las demandas del capitalismo occidental. Dividida en cinco “cantos” que transcurren desde los años sesenta hasta los ochenta, y utilizando tanto actores naturales como profesionales, la película nos muestra como Rapayet Abuchaibe (José Acosta) pide la mano de la joven Zaida (Natalia Reyes) ante la oposición de Úrsula Pushaina (una excelente Carmiña Martínez), la madre de ella y la cabeza de su grupo. Rapayet, buscando ofrecer una dote digna a la familia de su futura esposa, se asocia con su irresponsable e impulsivo amigo Moisés (Jhon Narváez), un “alijuna” (alguien externo a la cultura Wayúu), para comprarle marihuana a un familiar y venderla a unos hippies norteamericanos miembros del Cuerpo de Paz. Sobra decir que la intención y la ambición de Rapayet se verá manchada por la violencia inherente a cualquier tipo de negocio ilegal.

La lección moral que nos da la película de Guerra y Gallego es que los consumidores de marihuana, en la mayoría de los casos, no son conscientes del terrible daño que causa su consumo en los países donde se produce, a causa de la codicia, las traiciones y la venganza sin freno alrededor de su comercio.

Con una excelente factura, hablada en su mayoría en dialecto Wayúu y con una fotografía evocadora a cargo de David Gallego, la cinta comienza con una introducción algo torpe, para luego convertirse en un contundente relato sobre el auge y caída de un hombre que buscaba conformar una familia a partir de los medios equivocados. La irregularidad en las actuaciones y la falta de construcción de los personajes y sus relaciones, hacen que Pájaros de verano se perciba como una obra inferior si se le compara con el nivel logrado en El abrazo de la serpiente, pero, de todas formas, esta es una cinta impactante y de una extraña belleza, que vuelve a confirmar el talento de Ciro Guerra como director.

  1. No solo es dirigida por Ciro, desde el abrazo ya se venia construyendo esa dupla directiva que se afirma en Pájaros de Verano. Siendo una construcción mutua, aun sabiendo que ya no son esposos. Opino que el merito no es solo de Ciro.
